Why Is It So Hard To Fix Your Addiction?

If you're an addict, you have to understand what's behind your addiction: a reservoir of emotional pain.

What's bizarre about addiction is that you are not fully conscious of the pain involved — your subconscious mind is operating through a lot of emotional pain.

The reason you're a sugar addict or addicted to any other substance? You're seeking relief from that emotional pain. You want to be at ease with yourself. You want to feel balanced so you eat a lot of junk food or take a harmful substance.

Then you might ask: "Why the pain?" It all stems from your childhood trauma. You were traumatized as a kid by not having all of your needs met, including your emotional ones. The cure for your addictions is only through pain.

Here's what Eckhart Tolle has to say about addiction:

Every addiction arises from an unconscious refusal to face and move through your own pain. Every addiction starts with pain and ends with pain. Whatever the substance you are addicted to — alcohol, food, legal or illegal drugs, or a person — you are using something or somebody to cover up your pain.

The only way out of pain is by facing it directly — as it arises, you remain conscious of it until it subsides. You must be like an electrical conductor that has no resistance; you let any type of emotional pain move through you freely until it consumes itself completely.
